Are You Leveraging Your Public Affairs Technology Footprint?

Technology has unquestionably changed the way policy is made in this country as well as virtually every 1st and 2nd tier country and many 3rd tier countries.

Moreover, with the flexibility and affordability of today’s software and other resources you can implement state-of-the-art Public Affairs platforms that are remarkably effective and reliable.  Instead of having information locked away in individual employee file drawers, you can have information that is readily accessible to your entire team.

- Communications, opinion research and talking point development and dissemination

- Strategic Intelligence (industry allies, opponents, grassroots advocates)

- Stakeholder Engagement and Education from your desk to theirs at the speed of light

- Real-time Geo-coded Legislative Tracking (mapping, charts, etc.)

In 1996, I built Philip Morris’ first Intranet, called Issues.Net to warehouse vital information on policy issues. When the California legislature was debating the state budget at 2am and our NY HQ employees were snug in their beds, my company’s GA people still had access to sophisticated technology that enabled them to reconfigure argumentation on tax bills on the fly and demonstrate different economic impacts.   Because we arranged it very carefully, all of our people could access the right information exactly when they needed it.

All they needed was a “56K modem line”!   How times have changed!  Because, now they just need a smart phone, or a tablet for secure instant access to hundreds of gigabites of valuable data.  IF YOU MAKE IT AVAILABLE TO THEM!

Several years later, my chairman could access an online database and see in real time, color-coded maps of every state in the country,  showing the status of every major issue affecting operating companies generating nearly $60 billion in annual revenues. He used these maps  weekly in his briefings with analysts and institutional investors. Soon, we had over 1000 clients interacting with Issues.Net on a weekly basis – Finance, Planning, Marketing, Legal, political and other consultants, as well as C-Level executives in all our operating companies.

Today, I have access to even more advanced technology resources to overlay stakeholder engagement strategies on top of geocoded maps that ensure that my clients are affectively utilizing their stakeholder engagement budgets. Reports are literally at your fingertips that can accurately track your ROI in relationship building and stakeholder engagement…
